Proactive Cancer Screening: Why Prevention Matters - Even When You Can't Prevent Everything

Cancer Prevention

At 30 years old, I was in the best shape of my life.

I exercised regularly, ate well, prioritized sleep, and worked in the health and wellness industry.

Cancer was the last thing I expected to hear.

Then I was diagnosed with bladder cancer.

The diagnosis came as a complete shock. Over the next year, I underwent three minor surgeries, one major surgery, and five months of chemotherapy. The tumor was aggressive and had already perforated my bladder and spread into surrounding lymph nodes.

Thankfully, after nearly a year of treatment, I was declared cancer-free.

Looking back, my experience completely changed the way I think about preventative healthcare.

One of the greatest misconceptions about health is that if you do everything right, you'll never get sick. The reality is that illness can happen to anyone. We can't eliminate all risk.

What we can do is give ourselves the best possible chance to detect disease early, tolerate treatment better, recover faster, and maintain a higher quality of life throughout the journey.

While I don't believe my healthy lifestyle prevented my cancer, I do believe it helped me fight it.

At the time of diagnosis, I was physically active, eating well, sleeping consistently, and highly aware of my body. Because I was in tune with how I normally felt, I recognized that something wasn't right and sought medical attention quickly. That decision may have changed the course of my outcome.

Throughout treatment, I was fortunate to experience relatively few side effects and recovered well from multiple procedures. While every person's journey is different, I believe the foundation I had built through years of healthy habits helped me withstand the physical and mental challenges of treatment.

Life reflection after Cancer survival

This is why I am so passionate about the work we do at Primaris Health.

Our goal is not simply to help people avoid disease. Our goal is to help people build resilience, understand their bodies, identify risks early, and take a proactive approach to their long-term health.

Today, advances in preventative medicine allow us to look beyond traditional healthcare models. Through comprehensive assessments, advanced diagnostics, and innovative screening technologies, we can often identify risks before symptoms appear.

One example is the advanced cancer screening blood tests available through Primaris. These tests can detect biological signals associated with certain cancers and may identify potential concerns before symptoms arise, creating opportunities for earlier investigation and intervention.

While no screening tool can guarantee detection, these technologies represent an exciting step forward in proactive healthcare and early disease detection.

Just as importantly, if a health challenge does occur, our integrated healthcare team is there to help coordinate care, support lifestyle optimization, navigate specialist referrals, and ensure nothing falls through the cracks. Having experienced cancer myself, I understand firsthand how valuable that support can be.

healthy lifestyle and decisions to prevent cancer

My cancer diagnosis taught me a lesson I will never forget:

Being healthy doesn't guarantee that disease will never happen.

But the investments you make in your health today can profoundly influence how early disease is detected, how effectively you respond to treatment, and how well you recover.

Prevention isn't about perfection. It’s not simply about avoiding disease; it’s also about building the resilience and strength to face disease.

It's about giving yourself every possible advantage before you need it most.
